Ripper by Isabel Allende

This mystery/thriller follows a mother-daughter pair as they hunt and are hunted by a serial killer. It’s a fun beach read, following all the tropes of the genre: shocking murders, riddles about the killer’s method and motivations, and a desperate rush at the end to solve the mystery before the killer strikes again (and also some rather implausible blind spots on the part of the characters). If I didn’t know who the author was, I would have never guessed that this book came from the same pen as The House of the Spirits as there is very little that is reminiscent of Allende’s previous magical realism style, but it was an enjoyable read.
