Watchers by Dean Koontz

Watchers is a thriller and a love story at the same time. The tale centers around Einstein, a brilliant golden retriever who is the product of recombinant DNA experiments and a lab escapee. Einstein possesses full dog qualities, but he can also understand language and communicate with humans. He saves the lives of both Travis Cornell and Nora Devon on separate occasions and brings them together. Unfortunately, Einstein wasn’t the only genetic experiment that escaped into the California countryside. Something evil is mentally connected to Einstein and it is hunting him, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The story is one of a bond between Travis, Nora and Einstein and how love creates in us the desire to watch out for one another’s well being. There are suspenseful side plots in the novel, and Koontz is a master of descriptive language. His build up in suspenseful scenes made me cringe not knowing what the outcome would be.

I am a golden retriever owner, and I loved this book. If you enjoy a suspenseful tale with a lot of heart, I highly recommend this novel.
