Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan

Esperanza Rising
A favorite since childhood, I read this book again this summer for probably the twentieth time. It’s a beautiful riches-to-rags-to [a different kind of] riches historical fiction story written by the granddaughter of the original Esperanza about a wealthy Mexican family who flees over the border to work on farms in California. A must read for anyone interested in the history, culture, and people of unions and workers’ rights activism. And as a bonus, you’ll learn a few words in Spanish!
