The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place by E.L. Konigsburg

The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler PlaceAnother childhood favorite reread! There’s a lot going on in this book, and I think it’s best not to spoil too much, but Konigsburg is a perennial favorite of mine and this is probably my favorite of hers. She writes in a perfectly accessible and understandable style that’s not condescending and stays interesting and engaging for 9 years and counting. She has a pitch-perfect teenage girl voice that ages beautifully (instead of grating) and creates many wonderful characters, dynamics, and environments. When I was 10, I wanted to be the charming and witty, if occasionally maligned Margaret Rose Kane and now that I’m 19 I still kind of want to be her. I highly recommend this book, especially for anyone who over-empathizes with Hermione Granger and Rory Gilmore.
