Cold Burn of Magic by Jennifer Estep

Cold Burn of Magic

This is the first book of the Black Blade series; it is a young adult, urban fantasy which takes place in Cloudburst Falls. I enjoyed the fantasy world: the monsters, the magic (mostly enhancements to strength, speed, and senses), and the reason why people walked around with swords. The book seems very young adult at times with the main character being “completely captivated” with her potential love interest at first sight, some of the over the top “snarky” dialog (although my daughter is almost a teenager so I may end up re-calibrating), and the (at times) simplistic plot. I could suspend enough belief related to the main characters extraordinary set of skills (it is a fantasy book). Overall it was a light, very enjoyable story, and I plan to finish the series.

I recommend the book (with the caveat that you probably need to enjoy young adult fantasy)
